The placard accompanying the sculpture reads:
"Extinct Saber-Toothed Cat
This extinct predator used its
seven-inch-long canine teeth to slah its
prey's throat. once called saber-toothed
tigers because they were thought to have
stripes, they probably had spots instead. This
impressive cat is California's state fossil.
