The casino "Esplanaden" opened in 2006 in this historic building.
The building itself was built in the late 19th century as a Grand Hotel and was reopened as "Hotel Esplanade" in 1907. During World War II. the hotel went out of buisness. The building went to the cellulose company of "Phrix-Werke AG". From 1948 to 1951, part of the building was reused as a hotel but had to be shut down again when the house owner didn't renew the rental agreement.
The former ballroom was reconstructed into a cinema in 1948 by architect Cäsar Pinnau and was refered to as one of the most beautiful cinemas of the city, due to the original stucco decoration and luxorious chandeliers. In 1968, the ballroom was divided into two cinema halls, and in 1982, the cinema had to go out of buisness.
In 1971 the building should have been torn down to build new office buildings in its place, but the "Zentralkasse der Nordwestdeutschen Volksbanken" (central institution of northwest german community banks) bought the building as their administrative headquarter. In 1973 the building was severly damaged by a fire. Then ensuing renovations resulted in a small shopping mall in the first floor (only 10 small shops) that was connected to the Dag-Hammarskjöld-bridge in the west and the "Collonaden"-shopping strip in the east via footbridge. In 2005 the small shopping mall was closed down and both footbridges were deconstructed while the building itself was remodeled to the current state of casino and restaurants.
