Object: City of Deming. When the second transcontinental railroad, a joint effort by the Southern Pacific and the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe railroads was joined together near what is now know as Deming, it meant that the name for this railroad camp would carry extra significance. So when the Silver Spike commemorating that event was driven in 1881, the town was given the name Deming. It was thought Deming would be a major city, but the boom that was projected for it never happened, leaving Deming the small town it is today.
Person: Mary Ann Deming Crocker. Deming was the maiden name of the wife of Charles Crocker, one of the main financiers of the Southern Pacific, and since a place of such importance couldn't be named for just anyone, Mary Ann Deming Crocker's name lives on today.
