«Le Rien en Or» - Dieter Meier
La Boule d'Or Centenaire de Dieter Meier
Dans le cadre de son action baptisée «Le Rien en Or», Dieter Meier a doré onze objets de tous les jours dans le centre ville de Zurich, tels que des balustrades de pont, des panneaux de signalisation, des poteaux ou encore des gouttières. Une fois dorés, ces objets d’ordinaire insignifiants gagnent en considération. La présentation de la boule d’or centenaire, le 9 mai2008, dans la gare centrale de Zurich constitue le point d’orgue de cette exposition hors du commun.
Œuvre
Exposée dans un écrin de verre et de lumière sur le sol du hall de la gare, la «Boule d'Or Centenaire» a vocation à interpeller les voyageurs sur le rien et l’inutile. Pour valoriser l’éphémère, la boule d’or roulera huit fois en cent ans sur une planche de bois aux dates ci-après. Le 26avril2008, ce spectacle a eu lieu à Hambourg devant un casino.

Vie et œuvre de Dieter Meier
Né en 1945 à Zurich, Dieter Meier est originaire d’une famille de banquiers. Après une formation de juriste, il s’engage dans une carrière d’auteur de théâtre vouée à l’échec et s’adonne au poker pour arrondir les fins de mois.
Il commence sa carrière artistique fin des années 1960 et début des années 1970 en s’illustrant par des actions originales. Dieter Meier, qui se décrit personnellement comme un «anarchiste individuel», arbore toujours une moustache, un foulard et un cigare lors de ses apparitions publiques.
- En 1968, il met en scène un théâtre de rue devant l’entrée principale du Globus de Zurich.
- En 1971, il remet à chaque passant New-Yorkais qui prononce un «oui» ou un «non» un dollar et un reçu.
- En 1972, il apporte sa contribution au programme d’art conceptuel Documenta 5 en faisant sceller dans le béton devant la gare principale de Kassel une plaque métallique avec la mention: «Le 23mai1994 de 15h00 à 16h00, Dieter Meier se tiendra sur cette plaque». Promesse tenue bien évidemment!
A la fin des années 1970, il rencontre Boris Blank et devient la «voix principale» du groupe Yello, s’assurant ainsi une notoriété mondiale.
Dieter Meier est Président de l’Association des «Maîtres de Rien», dédiée aux artistes se consacrant à l’inutile.
Il a également fait construire un ranch du nom de «Ojo de Agua» en Argentine, où il produit des légumes bio et du vin rouge, crée des montres et élève des bœufs. Dans le petit magasin du même nom à Zurich, il vend du vin, de la viande, du maïs, du soja, des céréales et des légumes. Il emploie à ce jour 20collaborateurs.

Jahrhundertkugel - La Boule d'Or Centenaire von Dieter Meier
Unter dem Titel «le Rien en Or» hat Dieter Meier neben der Goldkugel auch elf Alltagsgegenstände in der Innenstadt von Zürich vergoldet: Teile von Brückengeländern, Signaltafeln, Strassenpfosten und Dachrinnen. Durch diese Vergoldung sollen die Gegenstände mehr Beachtung erhalten. Höhepunkt der Ausstellungsserie war die Präsentation der Jahrhundertkugel am 9. Mai 2008 im Zürcher Hauptbahnhof.
Das Werk:
Die goldene Kugel «La Boule d'Or Centenaire» ruht von Glas umgeben und beleuchtet, im Boden der Bahnhofshalle, wo sie auf das Nichtige, das Bedeutungslose aufmerksam machen soll. Zur Demonstration der Vergänglichkeit wird die Kugel in den nächsten 100 Jahren an den folgenden acht Daten herausgeholt um zwölf Meter auf einer Holzstrecke zurückzulegen. Am 26. April 2008 geschah dies z.B. in Hamburg vor einem Spielkasino.

Leben und Werk von Dieter Meier:
Dieter Meier, geboren 1945 in Zürich, stammt aus einer Bankiersfamilie. Nach einer Ausbildung zum Juristen arbeitete er zunächst erfolglos als Theater-Autor und hielt sich eine Zeit lang mit Pokerspielen über Wasser.
In den Anfangsjahren seiner künstlerischen Laufbahn zum Ende der 1960er und Anfang der 1970er Jahre machte Meier, der sich selber als «Individual-Anarchisten» bezeichnet und in der Öffentlichkeit fast ausschliesslich mit Schnurrbart, Halstuch und Zigarre auftritt, durch außergewöhnliche Aktionen auf sich aufmerksam.
- 1968 inszenierte er am Haupteingang des Zürcher Globus ein Straßentheater.
- 1971 gab er in New York jedem Passanten, der ihm das Wort «yes» oder «no» sagte, einen Dollar und überreichte hierfür eine Quittung.
- 1972 ließ er beim Kasseler Hauptbahnhof, als Beitrag zum «Concept-Art»-Programm der documenta 5 eine Metalltafel einbetonieren und mit der Aufschrift versehen: «Am 23. März 1994 von 15.00-16.00 Uhr wird Dieter Meier auf dieser Platte stehen», was dann auch tatsächlich geschah.
Ende der 1970er Jahre stieß er auf Boris Blank und erlangte als «Stimme» des Musik-Projekts Yello weltweite Bekanntheit.
Dieter Meier ist Präsident der Association des Maitres de Rien (Vereinigung der Meister des Nichts), wo sich Künstler der Umsetzung von Unbedeutendem widmen.
Inzwischen baut er in Argentinien auf seinem Anwesen «Ojo de Agua» (Wasserauge) Biogemüse und Rotwein an, entwirft Uhren und züchtet Rinder. Auch der kleine Laden in Zürich, in dem er Wein, Fleisch, Mais, Soja, Getreide und Gemüse verkauft, trägt den gleichen Namen. Inzwischen beschäftigt er 20 Mitarbeiter.

The Gold-plated Century Ball by Dieter Meier
Under the title "le Rien en Or" ("Nothingness in Gold") Dieter Meier has gold-plated not only the golden ball, but also 11 ordinary objects in Zurich's city centre: bridge railings, traffic signs, lamp posts and drainpipes. This gold-plating is intended to draw attention to the objects. The culmination of the exhibition series was the unveiling of the Gold-plated Century Ball in Zurich Main Station on 9 May 2008.
The work:
The Gold-plated Century Ball ("La Boule d'Or Centenaire") is displayed in an illuminated glass case in the floor of the station concourse with the object of drawing attention to nothingness and insignificance. In the next 100 years the ball will be taken out on the following eight dates and rolled 12 metres along a wooden gangway as a demonstration of transience. It also made this journey outside a gambling casino in Hamburg on 26 April 2008.

Life and work of Dieter Meier:
Dieter Meier, scion of a banking family, was born in Zurich in 1945. After studying law, he tried his hand at writing for the theatre without any success. For a while he earned his living by playing poker.
In the early years of his artistic career Meier, who calls himself an «individual anarchist» and always appears in public with moustache, neckerchief and cigar, attracted attention through unconventional actions.
- In 1968 he staged a street theatre in the main entrance of the Zurich branch of the Globus department store.
- In 1971 in New York he gave a dollar and a receipt for this amount to every passer-by who said «yes or no» to him.
- In 1972, as part of the «Concept Art» programme of documenta 5 in Kassel, he had a metal plaque set in concrete at the main railway station in Kassel which read: «On 23 March 1994 Dieter Meier will stand on this plaque from 3 to 4 pm», which he did.
At the end of the 1970s he met Boris Blank and achieved worldwide fame as the singer in the band Yello.
Dieter Meier is president of the Association des Maitres de Rien (Association of the Masters of Nothingness), a gathering of artists devoted to the realisation of insignificance.
On his ranch, Ojo de Agua (Water Eye), in Argentina he grows organic vegetables and produces red wine, designs watches and breeds cattle. In Zurich he runs a little shop with the same name in which he sells wine, meat, corn, soya products and vegetables. His operation now employs 20 people.
