The Gatewood West Historic District was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2004 (#04000125). It is bounded by N. W. 16th Street, N. Pennsylvania Avenue, N. W. 23rd Street, and N. Blackwelder/N. Florida Avenues. The District includes 481 contributing buildings and one site (a park). Most of the buildings were constructed in the 1920s, with the last two blocks built in the 1930s and 1940s. Most construction is single family residences in the Tudor Revival style. Most of these residences are one or two-story red brick homes with detached garages. The southeast portion of the District has a commercial cluster of buildings.
The oldest extant building in the District is the Bishop's Residence, associated with St. Francis of Assissi Catholic Church, which was built in 1906. This home is at 1905 N. Kentucky Avenue. The original 23 blocks of Gatewood Addition was platted in 1922, and construction completed by 1930.
The Plaza District along N.W. 16th Street is a commercial area of one-story buildings. All these buildings are original, with the exception of the Plaza Theater. The coordinates given above are for the Plaza Theater.
The Site included is Gatewood Triangular Park in the 2100 block of N. Indiana Avenue.
