Carey Place Historic District was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1998 (#98001224). This District is a very unusual residential area. Built on the 160 ft. wide right-of-way for a never-constructed interurban railroad line, it is notable for its narrow, 20 ft. wide street, the closeness of the houses to the street, and the consistency of the architectural style and color. The homes are built on shallow, wide lots.
There are 32 residences contributing to this District, plus eight landscaping objects that consist of the entries at the North and South ends of the street, plus at the middle. The District covers the 1800 to 2100 block of Carey Place, and consists of single family homes and duplexes in brick, stone and stucco, usually painted white and mostly in the Mission/Spanish Colonial Revival style. The residences were built during the period 1931-1932 and 1936-1938.
The landscaping objects are low and high brick piers with low brick walls, and painted black wrought iron signposts with Carey Place plaques on top.
The coordinates given above are at the South entrance. Coordinates for the North entrance are: 35 29.448 97 32.510.
