For years the 100-room Hotel Escondido, completed in 1886, was the preeminent hostelry in inland northern San Diego County. Land salesmen, land speculators, and prospective homesteaders stayed at this hotel as the city of Escondido was founded and grew. And 1915 promised to be a bumper year for the hotel, with the 1915 Panama-Pacific Exposition scheduled to be held in San Diego (today's Balboa Park).

But some competition was afoot. Henry J. Schrupp had purchased a hilltop parcel of 30 acres southwest of town, named it Charlotta Heights after his daughter, and built a modern hotel, also named after his daughter. While smaller than the Hotel Escondido, it offered more modern amenities. Both hotels were filled to capacity most of the time that the Exposition was under way in San Diego. But when the boom of business abated after the close of the Exposition, the smaller, more modern, Hotel Charlotta drew most of the travelers' custom and the Hotel Escondido faded into oblivion, closing for good in 1920 and the building demolished in 1925.
