Originally dedicated on November 11, 1969, the Freedom Flame, located next to the Ector County Courthouse, had deteriorated over the years. American Legion Post 430 had erected it "in honor of those that gave their all for the freedom we enjoy.", however, on Memorial day 2010 ii wasn't lit.
According to the story, "But the flame wasn’t burning on Memorial Day. The cement slab the flame’s leaf-shaped base rests on is full of cracks, and the cauldron itself is full of leaves. One of the posts that supports the small chain fence around the base has been knocked over. And as a local Boy Scout so succinctly put it, "It looked like crap."
The article goes on to mention that the scout, Brandon Holmes, has taken on the task of refurbishing the memorial as an Eagle Scout project. That Brandon was eventually successful in his endeavor is confirmed photos accompanying this waymark that show the refurbished Freedom Flame looking like it did years ago.
