NEW ENGLAND EXHIBIT

The people who lived in this kind of house in the early 1800's were mostly from New England. They came to Hawai'i either as traders and merchants or as missionaries sent by the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions (ABCFM) of Boston.

The missionaries brought with them: Western methods in business and trade; Christian religion, the Bible; concepts of individual land ownership and water rights; and, iron, steam and machinery.

Within fifteen years of their arrival, the ABCFM missionaries had put the Hawaiian language into writing, established hundreds of schools, trained native Hawaiian teachers in Western ways, and printed textbooks, newspapers and government documents in Hawaiian. By 1860, the literacy rate was higher in Hawai'i than it was in New England.
