The Magnolia Petroleum Building at 722 N. Broadway in the Automobile Alley Historic District is a five-story reinforced concrete building, with a blond brick veneer. It was built in 1919 and designed by well known architects, Hawk-Parr, in the Sullivanesque style (limestone eaves, simulated torches and symmetry, vertically aligned windows, columns and pilasters).
The roofline has a cornice ornamented with limestone arches. Around the north and west sides are the embossed words and numbers "MAGNOLIA PETROLEUM COMPANY,' 'MAGNOLIA PETROLEUM COMPANY," "1919," "BDWY" and "7TH STREET."
In 1979 when this building was placed on the Register, the first floor which had originally been used as a drive-through service station, was in poor condition and was only used for storage. The upper floors were deteriorating too, and the building was in need of renovation.
The building was the legacy of a now-defunct oil company, Magnolia Petroleum, which once operated one of the most extensive pipeline operations in the region. It was built at a cost of $150,000.
Originally, the first floor open arches were used for vehicles in and out of the service station with gas pumps located beneath the covered archway. This was the largest of seven Magnolia service station in Oklahoma City. An ornate mezzanine held the offices of the architectural firm, and the upper floors were offices and records of the oil company. Magnolia was purchased by New York Standard Petroleum Co. in 1925. Known today as Mobile Oil Corporation, they continued using the building until 1960. At that point, the building was allowed to deteriorate.
Fortunately, now the building has been completely renovated and is currently operated by First Fidelity Bank, with offices upstairs.
