Charles A. (Bergdoll) Braun migrated to Vista in 1928 to get away from family scandal and misfortunes created by the closing of the family brewery due to prohibition. He purchased a parcel of land on the old Buena Vista Rancho for the construction of his new mansion. He contracted with a well-known architect from San Diego and a local construction company to construct the main house and outbuildings. He planted citrus and avocado trees and when they died of a root virus common to the area, he sued the contractor for grading and removing all of the high-quality topsoil that he felt would have prevented the disease and destruction of the trees. He won the case. He purchased other properties in San Diego County and built and inhabited other residences there. He returned to the East only twice and the last time was for his burial.
Most of the house and outbuildings are obscured by foliage. The grounds are posted as private property so, unless you can make contact with someone on the grounds to obtain permission to enter the estate, please respect private property rights and the privacy of the property owners.
