This 1887 fountain is part of a commemoration of Malinche- the interpeter, guide and lover to Mexico's conqueror, Hernan Cortez.

This fountain, dated 1887, contains a ceremonial bowl which commemorates the woman known throughout Mexico as Malinche... the interpreter and lover of Herna Cortez, the Spanish conqueror of Mexico. See this Wikipedia article (visit link) to read about her reputation is complicated.
The sign, bowl and fountain are in the Plaza de Miguel Hidalgo adjacent to Xalisco's City Hall.
The sign reads:
"SEGUN LOS CRONISTAS
FRAY BARTOLOME DE LAS CASAS
Y FRANCISCO LOPEZ DE COMARA,
DONA MARINA MALINZIN O
MALINCHE ERA ORIGINARIA
DE LA REGION DEL ANTIGUO
REYNO DEL JALISCO.
ESTA PILA CEREMONIAL Y
SEGUN LA TRADICION,
PERTENECIO A LOS FAMILIARES
DE DONA MARINA.
EL PUEBLO DE XALISCO
LA CONSERVA COMO TESTIMONIO
DE SU HISTORIA
NOV. DE 1982"
which roughly translates to:
"According to the chroniclers
FATHER BARTOLOME DE LAS CASAS
AND FRANCISCO LOPEZ DE COMARA,
DONA MARINA MALINZIN OR
MALINCHE WAS ORIGINALLY FROM
THE REGION OF THE FORMER
KINGDOM OF JALISCO.
THIS CEREMONIAL bowl,
according to tradition,
belonged to the FAMILY OF
Dona MARINA.
THE PEOPLE OF Xalisco
PRESERVE THIS TESTIMONY OF ITS HISTORY.
