A church has stood on this site for nearly a thousand years. The name of the area, Crosthwaite, means cross in clearing. There are some famous people buried here.

Perhaps the most celebrated interred here is Canon Hardwicke Rawnsley who was vicar at this church between 1883 and 1917. He is better known as one of the founders of the National Trust. His wife founded the Keswick Arts School.
Also buried here is Robert Southey. Poet and newspaper editor. He lived at Greta Hall with his large extended family. William Wordsworth wrote his epitath on the memorial inside.
