This is a modern pub, half new build and half in what used to be the Working Men's Unionist Club. But the name has been taken from the town's past.

The Knights Templar were a religious order of knights who were involved in the crusades in the early 1300's. When they were disbanded a number of them settled in the Hertford area.
It is said that Hertford is a town with a ladrynth of tunnels running underneath the town centre. Many of the tunnels are bricked up, but it is rumoured that there is a secret society that meets down there still. So secret in fact that I am mentioning it here!
The six Templars, in question were arrested at Temple Dinsley near Hitchin and four of them, imprisoned at Hertford castle to the rear of this pub.
