The town of Dannevirke, a small Scandinavian settlement in the Tararua district was settled in October 1872 with the arrival of 13 Danish and eight Norwegian families brought out under the Vogel Immigration Scheme.
These pioneers cleared the bushland and farming was developed in the area. Dannevirke became a service centre for the rural community.
Dannevirke's Scandinavian heritage remains today, with the street names, the historic settlers cemetery, and the local Scandinavian Club is very active in the town.
The Viking depicted on the sign is very significant to Dannevirke, it signifies the heritage of Dannevirke. The back of the sign says..."Farvel. Please drive safely." Farvel is Danish for Farewell (or Goodbye).
