The beautiful Peace statue is located on the north side of Capitol Square. This monument was commissioned by the Women's Relief Corps and unveiled in 1923 to honor the Ohio men who served in the Civil War and the women left behind. The artist, Bruce Wilder Saville, was a faculty member at the Ohio State University in Columbus.
"Description: Bronze, female, winged figure of Peace, set in and extending up from a "U" shaped granite base. Her wings are spread open along the top of the base. Her proper left wing is partially covered by a billowing cape. She wears a long draped gown with cap sleeves, a cone shaped hat, and sandals. Her face is tilted slightly upward. Her proper right arm is raised over her head, and in her proper right hand she holds oak and laurel leaves. Her proper left arm is down at her side, with her proper left hand resting on an oval shield that stands at her side. On the upper portion of the shield an eagle is depicted, and in the center are bound reeds, with a tomahawk head behind them. On the back of the base are two bronze plaques bearing inscriptions and emblems; the proper left plaque has war emblems, and the proper right plaque has the insignia of the Woman's Relief Corps. The figure of Peace and the two plaques are patinated a red-brown color with bright metal highlights."
