The river has dug a deep cutting along this side of the valley, creating a high bank once across the water. The first bridge to be built here would have to raise the road high enough to span across to the opposite bank. Before this bridge in Wellington, travellers would have crossed much higher up, possibly at Bleng Bridge. Once across the river Bleng here, there is still a steady gradual climb on the road.
