The crystal-clear water of Rum Island Spring maintains a year round temperature of 72° F. The pool surrounding the spring is about 150 feet in diameter and flows directly into the Santa Fe River. The pool has a mostly sandy bottom and is shallow except at the vent. This makes it very popular with families on hot summer days.

Discharge measured on October 1, 1997 was 60.8 ft3/s making this a 2nd magnitude spring.

In springtime, the darker waters of the Santa Fe River can flood over the springs.
