Construction of the church began in 1899 and the church opened on January 25, 1903. The church was erected by Jane Lathrop Stanford in memory of her husband Leland Stanford, who died in 1893. This church along with all the oldest buildings at Stanford are built of a buff-colored sandtone quarried in the Santa Teresa Hills south of San Jose. The Church has 20 large stained glass windows plus many smaller ones and many mosaics and murals.
