The best place for panoramic views of Tokyo. When completed in 1958, Tokyo Tower became the world's tallest free-standing tower. Other towers have eclipsed it, but it remains the world's tallest free-standing steel structure at 332.5 m (1,091 ft).

Tokyo Tower was built first for functionality as a communications tower, gaining the height to broadcast television signals throughout the entire Kanto region.

It's secondary function as a tourist destination comes from its two observation decks, a two-level deck at 150m, and a smaller circular deck at a breathtaking special observatory at a height of 250m. These photos were all taken from the main observatory.

Tokyo Tower is located in the Kanto District of the city with views toward Tokyo Bay and the Kanto area. On clear days, one might see as far as Mt. Fuji.

One can't deny, however, that Tokyo Tower was also conceived as a symbol of national pride. Tachu Naito, already a renowned builder, was chosen to design the tower, and drew his inspiration from the Eiffel Tower in Paris, France. Although some 13m taller than the Eiffel Tower, the Tokyo Tower, at 4000 tons, weighs slightly over half as much. It's open design is intended to withstand the earthquakes and typhoons which are a constant threat.

It is said that a third of the steel used in this tower came from U.S. tanks that had been damaged or destroyed in the Korean War a few years before construction began in 1957.

For the visitor, there are additional attractions in the four story "Foot Town" building within the base of the tower. In addition to restaurants, shops and boutiques, there are several museums including the Guinness Book of Records Museum and a Wax Museum.
