The gold that sparked Colorado's Gold Rush in the 1860s was actually first found in Arvada, Colorado (http://www.waymarking.com/waymarks/WM11AD_First_Gold_Found_Plaque_Denver_CO ). Prospectors realized the gold had washed down from the foothills, but were on their way to the proven gold strike in California. So Colorado's gold rush was postponed a few years.
However, when gold was found in the Clear Creek Country area, it proved to be one of the richest strikes in the United States. The slogan of Idaho Springs and accompanying exhibits at the free Heritage Museum (in the Idaho Springs Visitor's Center (
visit link) ) remind visitors that Idaho Springs was where the first substantial gold was found. (Central City and Black Hawk will beg to differ.)
