This classic white bicycle is bolted to a stop sign at the corner of West 6th Street and Highland Ave. in Austin, TX. It is a memorial to the bicyclist John Smythe who was riding his bike at the time he was killed near this intersection by a drunk driver. The accident occured on 11 August 2005. He is the fourth bicycle-riding victim honored with a Ghost Bike in Austin. Mr. Smythe was 35 years old and had just begun riding his bike as a serious hobby when he was hit and killed. Smythe's sister posted an note to the Ghostbikes.org page about John Smythe that the drunk driver was arrested, released on bail, and fled the country to avoid prosecution. There are seven (7) Austin Ghost Bikes listed for Austin, TX on the website Ghostbikes.org.
