Hamilton #2 coal mine was operated by Island Creek Coal Company from 1976 to the late 1980's. The 20’ Diameter Air Shaft descending 350’ deep, was completed in 1976. Employing more than 280 Union miners that mined several thousand tons of bituminous coal daily. The prep plant is capable of cleaning 750 tons of coal per hour. After coal prices dropped in the late 1980's, Island Creek Coal closed operations at the site and sold it's interest to Consol Coal in Sesser, IL. Current permits are renewed until 2015.
