This Catholic church is a memorial to Father Richard Carberry. He was the priest here at the start of WWII. He enlisted in the Chaplins service, and saw action in the Pacific War Theater. He was on Manila and Bataan, then Corregidor. He was awarded two citations for outstanding bravery by Lt. General Wainwright on Corregidor, where he was captured. He survived a bombing of the Japanese ship that was carrying the prisoners to a Japanese work camp. He later died in that camp. This church first served as an Army Chapel at Camp Adair, north of Corvallis, Oregon. After WWII, it was dissassembled and moved to Silverton where it was rebuilt. One newspaper article describes the progress on the construction on August 22, 1947.
