The two stone pillars sit in the middle of what is known as
"The Avenue of Flags" in Lions Park.
The following is an extract from an article written by Jennifer Mortimeyer of the
Colorado Springs Examiner.
"The morning of September 11, 2009, a 9-11 Remembrance Ceremony was held in Woodland Park at the Lions Park "Avenue of Flags". The ceremony was sponsored by American Legion Post 1980. Woodland Park Mayor Steve Randolph and City Manager David Buttery each spoke on the significance of the day and what it means to them."
"Buttery also explained the significance of the memorials in Lions Park. Two rectangular pieces of Pikes Peak granite standing on end symbolize the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center. They are surrounded by a concrete border in the shape of a pentagon, which symbolizes the Pentagon Building. Surrounding this monument stand flags representing each branch of the Armed Forces."
