The Monastery of Santa Maria de Alcobaca, also known as the Royal Abbey of Santa Maria de Alcobaça or more simply as the Monastery of Alcobaça is the first fully gothic work erected on Portuguese soil. It was begun in 1178 by Cistercian monks. It is classified as World Heritage by UNESCO and a National Monument since 1910 IPPAR. On July 7, 2007 he was elected as one of the seven wonders of Portugal. In 1834 the monks were forced to leave the monastery, following the expulsion of all religious orders in Portugal during the administration of Joaquim António de Aguiar, a prime minister notorious for his anti-ecclesiastical policy.
