The first Governor of Rome in the Fascist era of the early 1900s, Filippo Cremonesi, comissioned the roman architect Pietro Lombardi with the design of several fountains, each characterizing the neighborhood of where the fountain was to be placed.

Nine such fountains by Pietro Fontana have been placed, between 1926 and 1929.

1. Fontana delle Anfore, piazza dell'Emporio, rione Testaccio;
2. Fontana dei Libri, via degli Staderari;
3. Fontana della Botte, via della Cisterna, rione Trastevere;
4. Fontana dele Tiare, Borgo vaticano;
5. Fontana della Pigna, in front of the basilica San Marco, rione Pigna;
6. Fontana delle Palle di Cannone, via Porta Castello, near Castel Sant'Angelo;
7. Fontana dei Monti, via di S. Vito;
8. Fontana delle Arti, via Margutta
9. Fontana del Timone, on the ancient port of Ripa Grande;

This fountain is characterized by the hills, Equilinio, Viminale, Celio, by which the neighborhood "Monti" covers.

Nearby the noteable marble arch, Arch of Gallienus, also used as Porta Esquilina on the Servian Walls, the earliest fortified walls of the city.
