Made with part of a monolithic single piece of marble stone from Carrara. It was transported on river barges.
It is 36.7 m long, and weights 770 metric tons (770,000 kg). The portion of it that is monolitic is 17.40 m long, 2.30 m wide on one end and 2.0 m wide on the opposite end. The monolith alone weights 300 metric tons
On Nov 25, 1928, transport of the marble block started from the Apuan Alps where the marble quarry was located. It was placed on a custom-built barge called L'Apuano.
On May 6, 1932, the barge reached its destination after going upstream on the Tiber river.
It was inaugurated on Nov 4, 1932.
