The trail out on the eastern tip of Madeira, Ponta de São Lourenço, is spectacular. This is saying a lot as there are many great hikes on this spectacular scenic island. Magnificent panoramas steep cliffs, jagged peaks, subtle details. All are here.

Follow the road past Caniçal until it ends. Parking seems ample but this is a veery popular trail. Come early on a weekday if the weather is fine. The start of the trail is a steep rough descent down to cross a valley over to the boardwalk. This may be deliberate to discourage the unprepared. An easier route but longer route is the old road to the left. As the boardwalk ends the trail gets more interesting with views out to the point and steep cliffs on the exposed coast. Note Ilhéu do Guincho, Screech Island as it is a natural arch but the opening is not apparent on the side views presented. We added the climb to the trig point for a special overview. The trail is well hardened with steps and paving stones but it can be muddy in sections. Cables provide a sense of security on exposed sections. The trail continues over hill and dale eventually coming to a junction giving you the choice of how to get to Casa de Sardinha, the reception center for the national park, the harbour route or the hill route. Go one way and come back on the other. Many pass the Casa do Sardinha and climb the final peak. This is well worth the view of the islands continuing out to the lighthouse and the offshore Ilhas Desertas.

In our month of hiking on Madeira this is the only hike we did twice. On our final day, this was our spectacular goodbye.
