PL POLSKI OPIS

Pierwszy pomost o dlugosci 31,5 m zostal wybudowany przez dr Jerzego Haffnera w 1827 roku. Do konca XIX wieku Molo zostaje wydluzone do 150 m, by w roku 1910 osiagnac 315 m. Poczatkowo obiekt spelnial funkcje lokalnej przystani, stopniowo przeksztalcajac sie (w miare rozwoju uzdrowiska) w obiekt rekreacyjny, a potem - po rozbudowaniu infrastruktury ladowej (fontanna, muszla koncertowa) - takze w obiekt imprezowy.

Obecny ksztalt obiektu zostal nadany w 1928 roku po najwiekszej w historii Mola przebudowie zainicjowanej rok wczesniej z okazji 25-lecia miasta i 100-lecia Mola (m.in. znaczne wydluzenie pomostu spacerowego i zagospodarowanie Skweru Kuracyjnego).

The first pier 31,5 meters long was built by dr. George Haffner in 1827. It was lengthen to 150 meters by the end of 19th century and in 1910 it was 315 meters long. At the beginning it was a local haven, but later it became (according to the growth of a health resort) a recreational facility and later - after development of a the land infrastructure (the fountain, a concerts' shell) - a place for cultural and sport events. Let us mention that the entrance has been payable since the second half of the 19th century.

The present shape of Molo was given in 1928 as the result of the biggest reconstruction initiated a year earlier on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of city rights and the 100th anniversary of pier's building (e.g. lengthening of the pier and arrangement of Curative Square). There hasn't been any significant changes since that time, although there has been same serious repairs later: in 1989-91 (the wooden head was replaced by a one made of reinforced concrete), 1999-2000, 2002-03 and 2004-05.

Molo was European initiative sine the very beginning: the founder was Frenchman, a veteran of Napoleonic Wars, on the Polish land governed by the Kingdom of Prussia (since 1871 by the German Empire), and both Germans nad Poles (including native Kashubs and Jews) were involved in its history. At the turn of 19th century Molo was visited by people from almost all European countries - thanks to railway and sea connections. By the power of Treaty of Versailles Sopot was incorporated in the Free City of Danzig. It was the Third Reich to reserve this place only for one nation since 1936, but in the end the result was completley different - after the World War Two German dwellers were forced to leave TriCity (Gdansk, Sopot and Gdynia). Symbolic conciliation was done in 1999-2000 when the Fundation of Polish-German Cooperation gave 2.000.000 zlotys (about $60.000) for general reconstruction of of Molo.

Since 2005 Molo bears name of the Pope John Paul II who visited the pier twice during his pilgrimage in his home country in 1987. In 1999 the Pope took a flight by helicopter over Molo to see colourful boats of Kashubs from Hel Peninsula and later participated in holy mass on the Sopot Racecourse with attendance of almost one million people when he spoke meaningful words: "There's no solidarity without devotion".
