The stories of Lexington and Concord are often told from the perspective of groups - the British soldiers, the Billerica Militia, and so on. However, this incident took place between two individuals, a deadly, personal showdown on the battlefield. The marker reads:
"At this well, April 19, 1775, James Hayward of Acton met a British soldier who, raising his gun, said, 'You are a dead man.' 'And so are you,' replied Hayward. Both fired; the soldier was instantly killed & Hayward mortally wounded."

Visit Instructions:
When logging a Massachusetts Historic Marker, we ask that you not only describe your visit, but to upload a picture from it. The picture does not have to be of the marker - one picture of the marker is enough. But a photo of you standing next to the marker or a photograph the subject of the marker - those are examples of possible photographs to upload.
