Winfred is an unincorporated town and is located in Lake County, South Dakota, near SD Highway 14.
Winfred was founded in 1882, and named for the daughter of F.W. Thaxter, who laid out the town.
As with any small community, it struggles with population decline. After the school closes, people leave even faster.
Winfred is no exception. It has a population of about 150 and very few businesses in town.
The cemetery is located about 1 mile north of the town proper and is a community cemetery. About 250 graves are in the cemetery.
