Raoul Wallenberg was a Swedish diplomat working in Hungary during World War II. He is credited with using his diplomatic powers and shielding from persecution more than 100,000 Hungarian Jews, including biochemist Lars Ernster, and future United States Congressman Tom Lantos. He was detained by the Soviet Army in early 1945, and has never been seen since. He is believed to have died while in their custody around 1947.
