This triangulation station disk from the U.S. Coast & Geodetic Survey (USCGS) is located at the southern most point of
Hammonasset Beach State Park in
Madison, Connecticut. The disk is sitting horizontal in the top of a large rock boulder which is about 4 feet in diameter and projects about 3 feet above the ground. The boulder with the disk is located next to a wooden viewing platform.
The disk has a lot of scratches but the stamping,
HAMMONASSET and
1932, is still readable - overall condition is good. The station
is listed in the National Geodetic Survey database.
According to the NGS datasheet there should be three reference marks nearby. I have searched the whole area but could not find any of these reference marks. Maybe you have more luck.
Here is a good description how to reach the mark taken from a 1976 recovery from the NGS datasheet:
TO REACH THE STATION FROM THE POST OFFICE IN MADISON, GO EAST ON U.S. HIGHWAY 1 FOR 1.9 MILES TO A SIDE ROAD RIGHT, GOING TO THE HAMMONASSET STATE PARK. TURN RIGHT AND GO SOUTH ON A PAVED ROAD FOR 0.25 MILE TO THE ENTRANCE OF THE PARK. CONTINUE SOUTH AND THEN EASTERLY FOLLOWING THE MAIN ROAD THROUGH THE PARK FOR 0.9 MILE TO A T-ROAD AT A CONCESSION BUILDING. TURN LEFT AND GO EASTERLY ON A PARK ROAD FOR 1.25 MILES TO A PARKING AREA AT THE EAST END OF THE PARK AND THE STATION JUST SOUTH OF THE PARKING AREA ON A LOW HILL.
THE STATION MARK IS A STANDARD DISK CEMENTED IN A DRILL HOLE IN THE TOP OF A BOULDER WHICH IS ABOUT 4 FEET IN DIAMETER AND PROJECTS ABOUT 3 FEET ABOVE THE GROUND SURFACE. THE STAMPING ON THE DISK HAS BEEN DEFACED BUT THE DISK IS STILL SOLID. IT IS 71 FEET NORTH OF THE HIGHWATER LINE, 24.5 FEET WEST OF THE WEST SIDE OF A LARGE BOULDER, 14 FEET SOUTH OF A FOOT PATH AND 4.5 FEET NORTH OF A METAL WITNESS POST.
In any case enjoy your visit of Hammonasset Beach State Park.
