"A time capsule placed in the cornerstone of the monument in 1894 includes a variety of articles such as Confederate currency, maps and legislative bills, newspapers and journal copies, flags, items belonging to General Robert E. Lee, and a Confederate song book..
The monument is on the west side of the grounds of the State Capitol and was placed by the State of North Carolina. The cornerstone can be found on the base on the northeast corner (to the right as you are facing away from the Capitol building).
As with many of these older time capsules, there was no plan in place to extract the contents on a given date. They remain in the cornerstone.
