The city of Columbus, GA has a long history and is named to honor the discoverer of the Americas, Christopher Columbus. On October 12, 1992, the city of Columbus celebrated the 500 years since Columbus, the man, landed in what became known as Haiti, and thus made the discovery of the "New World". Without getting into the debates and controversies about Columbus as a man or as an explorer, the city of Columbus honored his discovery by dedicating their newly built Chattahoochee Riverwalk on that day. This marker recognizing the quincentennial of Columbus' first voyage. It is a square terra cotta designed with simple artwork and some text which reads: "Columbus Quincentennial / 1492 - 1992 / Pinta Santa Maria Nina / Riverwalk Opening / October 12, 1992." This is mounted on a short brick base and is near the railing along the Chattahoochee River at a long curve in the walkway. Looking over the top of the marker, an observer will be looking out over the river toward the opposite bank of Alabama.
