This classic polish black granite rectangular POW-MIA monolith has a unique feature worth seeing. Atop the large monument is additional artwork of a sculpture of a bald eagle flying free as the chain that had held it captive is broken. It is a poignant symbol of how it is possible that current POW-MIA veterans can still escape their captivity and return to the freedom they so bravely fought for. This monument is outside the entrance to the Phenix City Amphitheater located at 508 Dillingham St., Phenix City, AL., just over the Dillingham Bridge as you cross the Alabama state line from Georgia. This POW monument is dedicated to all POW-MIAs past and present. It was dedicated on 19 Sep 2009 by the Fort Benning Sergeants Major Association. The inscription on the monument reads: "POW-MIA You Are Not Forgotten / Dedicated to all our Nation's POW-MIA PAST - PRESENT / Fort Benning Sergeants Major Association / 19 Sep 2009". Fort Benning is a major U S Army training base that covers land in both Georgia and Alabama. Basic training, Officer's Candidate School, Army Ranger training and many other specialty training courses are taught there. It is appropriate that a POW-MIA monument be so close to the base from which many of our POW-MIA veterans have spent time during their Army career.
