The Columbus Public Library is one of the largest library building I've come across. The acreage of land surrounding it is amazing. There are blocks of open landscaped grounds in front and in back of this library in Columbus, GA. There is a walking path (a hike and bike path) that meanders around the property in front that leads you through various biomes of ecologically diverse plants. Along the path you will see a small monument about three feet high or so standing by itself just off the formal pathway. It is all by itself and not that noticable unless you are passing it by. This monument is a citizen memorial titled "Founders Corner" and is "In honor of the Board of Directors who established the first public library in Columbus on January 10, 1881." The vertical front of the light gray granite marker is inscribed with a quote from First Lady, Mrs. Lady Bird Johnson. It states: "Perhaps no place in anhy community is so totally democratic as the town library. The only entrance requirement is interest. Lady Bird Johnson." The top of the marker holds a bronze plaque that reads: "FOUNDERS CORNER / In honor of the Board of Directors who established the first public library in Columbus on January 10, 1881. / Original Board members for the Columbus Public Library Association Dr. charles E. Estes - President, G. Ginby Jordan - 1st Vice President, Rev. Howard W. Key - 2nd Vice President, Lionel C. Levy - 3rd Vice President, William R Bedell - 4th Vice President, J. Harris Chappell - Secretary, Early Hunt Epping - Treasurer, Lewis G Schuessler, Louis Wells, Cliff B. Grimes, Richard Kirven and Henry R. Goetchius. / The landscaping and monument were donated by the Muscogee County Library Foundation. / Dedicated this day, October 8, 2009. //"
