An unusual pub name but not unique. And with a slightly obscure history.

One line of thinking was that this was a name given to a pub which had become run down and occupied by rats. However, an alternative might be that it was a proper old "drinker" with a somewhat less than salubrious reputation and clientèle. Exactly the sort of people that wouldn't use the word "clientèle" in fact.

This sign is new within the last 15 years or so. The old one was more traditional and painted.
