St Luke's Biblical Garden and Labyrinth, is off the end of Murray Street Bell Block. Prior to the development of the Bell Block by-pass, you could also enter from Devon Road. (There is a gate, but nowhere to pull up on the sholder).

St Luke's Biblical Garden and Labyrinth
In 2001 a decision was made, with the consent of, the Taranaki Anglican Trust Board, to create;
* A Biblical Garden
* A Labyrinth
* An Information Shelter
* Entranceways
* And a resiting of the existing Lych Gate

This was seen to be an enhancement of these grounds, recognising the sacred and community history represented by those who have been placed here. A peaceful environment has been created along with a contemplative walking space in the form a the Labyrinth.

The Labyrinth is a copy of the one found in Chartres Cathedral in France.

The garden has been planted with trees and plants that can be found in the Bible.
Almond: Ecclesiastes, Ch. 12:5
Apple: Song of Songs, Ch. 2:3
Fig Tree: Proverbs, Ch. 27:18
Flax: Proverbs, Ch. 31, 13
Grapes: Leviticus, Ch. 26:5
Olive: Genesis, Ch 8:11
Palm: Exodus, Ch 15:27
Pomegranates: Joel, Ch. 1:12
Rose: Song of Songs, Ch. 2:1

There is an avenue of trees in the garden, but as the garden was only planted in 2001, it has a way to go to full development. There is a stone on which is John Ruskin's poem - attampted:

THE TREES
They who plant an avenue of trees
cannot in the nature of things hope to
enjoy them in maturity and grandeur.
They plant for generations unborn.
Much that we have and prize today
comes from our fathers. They did not
make or build to last their time but
rather that something should mark
their passage and their memorial.
