The four communities that make up present day Bellingham -- Bellingham, Sehome, Fairhaven, and Whatcom -- were founded to harvest the vast natural resources of the area which was primarily trees. These trees helped build today's San Francisco and other West Coast cities and town. And even Sehome Hill wasn't spared. It was actively logged as recently as 1906.
In 1922 the hill, which overlooks Downtown Bellingham and Fairhaven, was set aside as a park and in 1967 it become an arboretum. In some ways this is not a traditional arboretum but more a study in the regrowth of a coniferous forest after having been extensively logged. Nevertheless it is great place to walk and experience nature.
