TUNNEL THROUGH TIME
For over 90 years large Douglas Firs have stood watch over this tunnel and witnessed many changes.
In 1923, workmen blasted this tunnel through sandstone for the Huntroon Road. Model-T Fords sputtered in and out on Sunday drives. Presently, this road is the main walking path from WWU to the top of Sehome Hill.
In 1967, the Huntroon Road was closed to cars, and Sehome Hill became an arboretum.
Now the tunnel walls echo with the symphony of bird calls and the voices of people enjoy this sanctuary in the middle of Bellingham.
