Built during 1889-91 by the Grand Trunk Railway to link Sarnia, Ontario with Port Huron, Michigan, the St. Clair Tunnel was the first underwater tunnel in North America

This National historic event has been well recognized by plaques.
At this location, overlooking the Canadian portal of the tunnel, there are both this National and an Ontario Historic Plaque .
Close by there is a National Historic Civil Engineering Site plaque recognizing this engineering achievement and the two tunnel builders, Joseph Hobson (the old tunnel) and Duncan MacLennan (the new one).
Across the border near the Michigan portal there is a
Michigan Historic Marker and there are no less than three caches associated with these plaques.
