The Screes Inn is in Nether Wasdale, a hamlet at the entrance to Wasdale. There are two signs, one on a post in front showing a rowing boat on the shore of Wastwater. The other is on the pub and more of a painting of Wastwater than a corny pub sign.

Opposite the Screes Inn is the Strands pub and micro brewery. The Screes is now owned by Robinsons brewery in Manchester, who bought the Hartleys brewery chain in Ulverston. The sign shows a rowing boat beached on the west shore of Wastwater, with the classic view of Kirk Fell and Great Gable at the head, with the Wastwater screes on the right.
