The Civil War Monument placed in Boonville MO Cooper County Court House commemorates the battles June 17 and September 13, 1861, and the capture of Boonville October 16, 1864.
June 17, 1861 1300 Union Soldiers under General Nathaniel Lyon faced Confederate Major general Marmaduke. Marmaduke went on to be the Governor of Missouri 1884 to 1887.
September 13, 1861, Colonel William Brown of the Missouri State Guard attacked with 800 men the 140 man pro-Union Boonville Home Guardsmen. The Home Guardsmen defeated them. Colonel Brown was killed during the battle.
October 16, 1864 the Confederate forces took over Boonville.
