Following a successful Burmese invasion of Siam (Thailand, as it was then known), a Thai noble of Chinese ethnicity, known to history as King Taksin, took command of the kingdom and repelled the Burmese. However, following his successes he became somewhat unstable, and it became necessary to remove King Taksin from office. His replacement was one of his generals, King Rama I, who founded the Chakri dynasty of Thailand (the current King of Thailand is the ninth of this dynasty).

To aid him in his rule of Siam, King Rama I gave a great deal of power and responsibility to his brother Maha Sura Singhanat (1744 - 1803), even to the point of acknowledging him as his successor. This brother helped defeat repeated Burmese attempts to re-invade the Kingdom, and also led Thai forces into neighbouring Burma and Laos. He is noted for his loyalty to his brother the king.

This statue of Maha Sura Singhanat is located in the royal area of the city of Bangkok, along the Chao Phrayo river. This is also a major tourist spot in Bangkok. The King's brother stands tall, with a sword balanced across his outstretched arms. He gazes directly forward.
