Fairbanks was offically named when the Post Office opened in 1883. Fairbanks has been known previously as Santa Cruz, Junction City, and Kendall. Fairbanks is now be preserved as part of the San Pedro River Conservation Area. Fairbanks was important as a rail hub for many towns in the area. One spur went to the west to Patagonia and Nogales. Another spur went on the Sierra Vista and Ft. Huachuca. A spur also went to Tombsone, and the final Spur went to Douglas. Several of the spurs were abondoned in the late 50's and early 60's. The end for the rail tracks occured in 2007. The town site is opened to the public from 8:00 AM until dusk. The old school house has been restored and open for public visits. I can remember coming to Fairbanks in the early 1960's and stopping in the old store to buy a soda.
Fairbanks future as a ghost town started with the end of mining in the Tombstone area and the closing of the mines in Bisbee in 1974.
