To the southeast of the John Wesley Raley Chapel on the campus of Oklahoma Baptist University stands a black granite wall, approximately 25 feet in length and about 8 feet high. The granite is bordered with brick.
The Senior Class of 1998 has dedicated this Legacy Wall to the traditions and symbols that no graduate of OBU will ever forget.
The first panel on the left and the last panel on the right list Contributors to the Wall.
The panels beginning from the second left describe:
The Beanie - (OBU is one of only a few colleges who still use the beanie to designate Freshman, so that upperclassmen can take special notice to make them welcome)
The Bison - (a reminder of the large animals that roamed the campus when it was first established, particularly at a location known as Bison Hill. The school's teams are called The Bison.)
The Seal and Dedication - (Dedicated to Dr. Bob P. Ayers, OBU President 1982-1998)
Hymn to Alma Mater - (The words to the school's Alma Mater)
OBU all hail thy name!
Sons and daughters honor thee;
May thy standard green and gold
Lead eternally.
Proudly stand on Bison Hill
'Neath the wind-swept sky;
Alma Mater we will praise thee
As the years go by.
When the shades of evening fall,
Through the hush of fading day,
Silent voices praise thy name,
Hearts look up to pray.
May thy spirit guide thy sons,
Keep thy daughters true,
Loyal to our Alma Mater, God bless OBU.
School Yell - (Ka-Rip - the unusual words that will not soon be forgotten by alumni)
This is a fascinating Legacy Wall and you can see the love the students have for their Alma Mater.
