From the information sign at the tree:
This old tree is over 100 years old. Photographs show it as substantial by 1906. It watched over "our boys" as they left to fight "The War to End All Wars" in 1917, stood steadfast during the Great Depression and watched again as young men left for WWII and the Korean War. It sheltered us benevolently during the picnics of the 50's, the love-ins of the 60's and for every Remembrance Day and Festival throughout the century. It witnessed the Commercial Hotel consumed by flames and the slow destruction of the venerable Tzouhalem Hotel across the road.
But like everything else, this tree is coming to the end of its life. We will maintain it for as long as possible, but in the near future, it will have to be removed. When the time comes, it will be replaced with another tree that will flourish and be as gracious a friend as this one has been.
