The School of Army Sergeants is a Military Establishment of Vocational Education with the mission to ensure, through the courses it offered, cultural preparation, technical and professional military-required entrance and career development for NCO of the permanent staff. This school are taught the training courses for Sergeants and the Sergeant Promotion Course Assistant and Sergeant Chief.
root genealogical School of Sergeants of the Army dates from 1641 with the creation of the oldest military corps in Portugal and was referred to as "Third ELVAS" and is the inheritor of the traditions of various units, including those of the Infantry Regiment No. 5 , famous for his involvement in the action of the "March 16, 1974." Throughout its history, this unit was located in Elvas, Terceira, Lisbon, Porto and Caldas da Rainha, participated prominently in several battles and campaigns in which Portugal was involved.
The June 1, 1981, with the extinction of the Infantry Regiment of Caldas da Rainha, is created in the same city, the School of Army Sergeants, whose name and location remains to the present day.
Its banner bears the decorations of the National Honorary Member of the Military Order of Avis and the Order of Liberty.
